Language Analysis

I will be using simple english with a simple font so it is easily read by the age range and understandable, there will be no slang words or street terms used so that the adults can understand and read the article and understand it as well as the teenagers. also there wont be an excessive amount of writing so they don't get bored and loose interest in the magazine.

Music Magazine Target Audience

The people i want reading my magazine are teenagers and adults who enjoy new Alternative music and old Alternative music and want to know whats going on in the Alternative Music Charts, who's new and what the Alternative artists and bands get up to. To do this i will have to style my magazine to what appeals to them.
The magazine i am creating could also include other features such as upcoming films, Healthy Eating and essential things that teenagers and adults want to know and will use.
Spin is the type of magazine that my age group would read because it looks like an adult magazine but can also be for teenagers as well. This magazine keeps them up to date on whats happening in the music industry and is a good magazine to bace mine off.

www.uktribes.com :Explains what types of social groups are in alternative music-

These people are creative and open to new things and ideas and have a wide imagination so they will take all aspects into account which is good when making my magazine as I can add new ideas, creative ideas, break conventions and the target audience will take them into account and be more open minded about the new ideas.

Genre Of Music Magazine

Alternative Music
The genre of my magazine that i would like to use is Alternative music because it is a verity of music so all ages and most genres can enjoy the magazine, also because i like this type of music and i think it would be fun to create a magazine from it. The style for the magazine will be informative but with lage images of the artists and bands.

Some Alternative Artists: Two door cinema club, Foster the people, Daughter, The black keys, Gin Wigmore, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Arcade Fire.
Research On Alternative Music:
Alternative music emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular by the 1990sAlthough the term was most commonly associated with: loud, distorted guitar sound, its original meaning was broader, referring to a generation of musicians unified by their collective debt to the musical style.

Colour Pallet Research

I Have made a selection of colours h choose from for my magazine that will suit the genre and will make the magazine stand out amongst others. I have only chosen 3 colours so that it is easy to keep consistency throughout the magazine and also they work together well.

Practice Music Magazine

This is my practice Music magazine which i have made. I have show this in step by step so that you can see my ideas and how i changed thing to match. First of all i chose the name/masthead for my magazine which is 'BASS MAN' because it links into music and is catch so you will remember the name and isn't to long, the second thing i added was an image of 'Coldplay' who are big in the music industry and will attract attention to the magazine and they have a bass player which links into the title well. Under 'BASS MAN' i placed 'Music Magazine' just so people can identify the type of magazine before they pick it up or buy it, then added a quote from an article that would be in the magazine and made it smaller but noticeable on the white background so it was still visible but the masthead still dominated the page and didn't go un-noticed. After the quote was added i placed a barcode opposite the masthead in the corner where people don't take too much notice but if they do see it it will still fit and match the rest of the magazine which then i placed the price above the barcode because they are related and its easy for people to tell the price of the magazine and pay for it. I then finally added the issue number under the masthead allowing the buyer to keep unto date and not buy the same magazine accidentally and it also shows how many there has been so far incase people want to read the ones before hand.

Music Magazine Research Double Page Spread

I Like how 'Radar' have set out their double page spread with the main image to one side and all the information on the other allowing them more room to write what they want on the other side. I also like how they have small images to go with the other pieces of writing and the colour scheme they are using to that helps the magazine stand out and it is attractive to teenagers which is the age range for my magazine.
The spin magazine is a simple page with the pictures of the artist with little wording. this allows you to focus on the artist/artists more and still have something to read and enjoy when looking at the picture. I think there might be just too much space on the left of the left image and it should be filled up but it is also a good idea for my magazine and might be applied.
The magazine here makes you focus on the more visible artist but also provides lots of information that stands out and links to the image used. the faded artists on the image almost go unnoticed because they are faded but you can still see they are part of the article. Once again the image is to one side and the text the other which i like and think is creative and allows room to write about the artist/band.

Music Magazine Research Contents Page

The Contents Page of 'Spin' magazine Focuses on the artist more than the pages and it give the page numbers the the pages they think are more interesting and allow you to find whats on the other pages so you actually read the whole magazine. The writing Stands out on the page because of the colours used: Blue, White and Black which allow you to see them on the pale gray background and not go un-noticed because of the large dominating picture next to them.
Dazed Magazine says whats on all the pages and focuses on the contents of the magazine more than the  artists who are in the middle that don't stand out as well as the text does because of the Red, Black and White used in the interesting font choice so the reader will focus on the rest of the page on whats in the magazine and pay little attention to the Artists in the middle.

Q Magazine Focuses more on the artist than the contents and only gives you some of what will be in the magazine instead of whats on every page. They also use the same colour scheme on the contents page as they do on the front cover and dress their artist in the same colours too so they can keep the consistency thought the magazine. The contents page also tells you about their other magazines and has more information than the other contents pages of other magazines.

Music Magazine Research Cover's

Spin Magazine: The colours used on the Spin Magazine all complement eachother in their own way, like the slightly yellow/light brown photo makes the Black and Blue coloured text stand out but also allows the red backround of Spin dominate the magazine front cover and not go un-noticed. The Magazine sticks to 3 colours for their text and boxes which are White, Black, Red and Blue which are all bright colours that stand out to a passing customer that allow the magazine to be noticed and they also make the magazine look interesting.
The dazed magazine uses a simple front cover that focuses on the mast head and the model/celebrity rather than the small text around the magazine. The magazine uses bright colours that help it stand out amongst all the other magazines, the flowery mast head attracts attention to itself because of its interesting colours and also the pale tray/yellow background complements it. The model/ Celebrity stands out to the because of the makeup used and how its different to how most models and celebrities would be dressed like because of the skull on her face and the daisy chain in her hair.
Q Magazines logo and masthead dominates the magazine because it stands out more than the other colours on the magazine which might come across as dull and boring because they are dark and not as creative as the previous magazines. The large righting in the middle attract you because it stands out more than the other text around it and is brighter so you will see it more than the other text too which may attract you to buy the magazine. The magazine cover uses 4 simple colours: Red, Black, White and Dark Gold, they all work well together and nothing looks out of place but the magazine could be brighter and use more lighter colours.

Mood Board

This mood board consists of images that i like and think are creative that would suit my magazine also what types of colours i might what to use in my music magazine and how well they work together. I also added some magazines on there that i liked the colour scheme of like 'Dazed', 'Wire' and 'Q'. The mast head on the dazed magazine is the type of idea i would like to use on my magazine to make it stand out and i like the pale colour it sits behind because it fits the genre of my music magazine which is Alternative music, I also like how 'Wire" have made there model/Celebrity the focus of the page which i will also be considering in my final pice. The album covers have lots of different creative ideas and fonts that i also liked and am considering using in my music magazine and the other pictures are colours and images that i like and may use.

Colours: Text on Background

Black on white is still the easiest way to present type and to read it and you change that colour at your peril. Using coloured paper, coloured type or a heavy type patch often reduces legibility. In tests carried out by Karl Borgrgrafe (cited in Favre and November 1979) to see which colours worked best together, the following taxonomy of colour mixes was discovered, starting with the most legible, and working through to the least legible.

Black on yellow
Yellow on black
Green on white
Red on white
Black on white
White on blue
Blue on yellow

Red on orange

As you can see, black and white comes pretty near the top although the list suggests that a yellow panel behind the black type would improve legibility (which is why important warning signs of danger are usually printed black on yellow.)

From: Designing for Newspapers and Magazines, by Chris Frost, Routledge, 2003

Note: though black on yellow may be more striking than black on white, it is unlikely to be more pleasing in large quantities. Magazine designers have to strike a balance between legibility, impact, and reader satisfaction.
Between getting attention, and not being annoying.   CE
